The Story

Low-Maintenance White Birch with Golden Fall Interest

Enjoy the timeless beauty of white birch in a more manageable size with the Proven Winners® Avalanche™ Birch. This multi-stemmed tree features striking white bark that peels to reveal subtle hints of pink and tan in its early years. In fall, its lush green foliage transforms into a brilliant golden hue, providing a dramatic seasonal contrast.

Perfect for smaller landscapes, the Avalanche™ Birch thrives in courtyards, near buildings, along driveways, and in island beds. Its compact habit makes it an excellent choice for framing homes and businesses, adding both structure and beauty without overwhelming the space. Plus, its smooth, peeling bark remains a focal point even in winter, ensuring year-round visual interest.

Low-maintenance and resistant to bronze birch borer, this hardy tree is an excellent choice for novice gardeners. Deer tend to ignore its bark, making it a durable and reliable addition to landscapes. Whether planted as a single specimen or in naturalized groupings, the Avalanche™ Birch enhances any setting with its refined appearance. Grow yours today!

About Proven Winners®: Proven Winners® ColorChoice Shrubs offers flowering shrubs, evergreens, and trees that have been tested for eight to ten years to ensure they outperform conventional varieties. That means bigger flowers, more colorful foliage, reblooming, disease resistance, new habits, or anything that makes them more beautiful and easier to grow in your landscape or garden.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Place the tree so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface, then backfill and water thoroughly. Mulch around the base to retain moisture, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.

2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first few years while the tree is becoming established. Water deeply once or twice a week, adjusting based on rainfall. Mature trees are more drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional deep watering in dry conditions.

3. Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

4. Fertilizing:  Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to support healthy growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it can encourage weak growth. A layer of compost around the base each year can also improve soil quality and provide nutrients.
