Planting & Care
1. Planting: The Better Boxwood Skylight™ prefers well-drained soil to prevent root rot and is adaptable to acidic, alkaline, clay, and sandy soils. It thrives in partial shade or dappled sunlight but can tolerate full sun; in hot climates, afternoon shade is beneficial. Ideally, it should receive 4-6 hours of morning sun. Space at least 36 inches apart from other plants.
In colder areas, plant in a sheltered location to protect against winter winds. Amend soil with compost if needed, especially in clay or sandy conditions.
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and deep enough for the root system. Loosen any root-bound roots before planting. Position the boxwood so the top of the root ball is level or slightly above the surrounding soil to prevent water pooling. Fill and firm the hole, watering thoroughly to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. Add a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base, leaving a gap from the stem to prevent rot.
2. Watering: In its first year, the Better Boxwood Skylight™ needs regular deep watering, once a week, and more often during hot, dry spells. Once established, reduce watering while keeping the soil evenly moist.
3. Fertilizing: In early spring, fertilize the plant with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can result in excessive, weak growth that makes the plant more vulnerable to diseases.
4. Pruning: The Better Boxwood Skylight™ grows compactly and requires little pruning. For a specific shape, prune lightly in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to maintain its form and encourage fuller foliage.
