The Story

Low-Growing Shrub with Dark Green Leaves Year-Round

Try the Better Boxwood® Renaissance™ Shrub for a compact plant that can be used for low hedges, topiaries, parterres, or as added greenery in your garden. This cultivar is even resistant to boxwood blight, a common problem with other varieties.

Enjoy dark green leaves all year in this low-growing shrub for an evergreen hue that livens up any yard. Its small stature packs a powerful punch, with its dense, rounded form that you can shape into any style.

Plus, this disease-resistant plant only requires pruning once yearly, making it a low-maintenance option for any space. It's a must for any formal or casual garden, with lush leaves that hold their green hue better than other boxwoods.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: The Better Boxwood® Renaissance™ thrives in well-drained soil, adaptable to various types from acidic to alkaline. For optimal growth, choose a location with partial shade or dappled sunlight, ideally providing 4 to 6 hours of morning light. In warmer climates, afternoon shade helps prevent heat stress. To protect against winter damage in colder areas, plant in a sheltered spot away from harsh winds.

Space Renaissance™ shrubs 1 to 2 feet apart for a dense hedge. They typically reach 1 to 2 feet in height and width, making them ideal for small hedges and topiary designs. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but the same depth to encourage healthy root establishment. After planting, backfill, firm the soil, and water thoroughly.

Add a 2 to 3-inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and protect roots, ensuring a gap between the mulch and stem to prevent rot.

2. Watering: In its first year, Renaissance™ needs regular watering to establish strong roots. Water deeply once a week, and increase the frequency of watering during particularly hot or dry periods. Once established, reduce watering to keep the soil evenly moist, avoiding waterlogging.

3. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth. Be careful not to apply too much fertilizer, as excess nutrients can result in weak growth and increased vulnerability to diseases.

4. Pruning: Renaissance™ has a compact, dense growth habit, making pruning optional. If shaping for hedges or topiaries is desired, prune lightly in late winter or early spring. Occasional trimming encourages thicker, uniform foliage.
