Planting & Care

1. Planting: To plant peonies, select a location with full sun. In southern and warm western regions, afternoon shade will help the flowers last longer. Use well-drained, organic-rich soil. If the soil is too acidic, add calcitic lime during planting. Position the roots with the eyes (buds) facing up, covering them with one to two inches of soil in the North and up to one inch in the South. After the ground freezes, mulch with evergreen boughs or salt marsh hay for protection.

2. Watering: It is recommended to provide one inch of water per week during the growing season.

3. Fertilizing: Peonies benefit from an annual application of one inch of compost or aged manure; no additional fertilization is needed.

4. Pruning: In the fall, cut back foliage and remove it from the premises to discourage pests from overwintering.
