Planting & Care
1. Planting: This plant is adaptable and thrives in various soil types, as long as it is well-drained. Select a planting site that receives full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day) or part sun (around 4 to 6 hours of sunlight daily). When planting, space each plant about 2 to 3 feet apart to allow for adequate growth and air circulation. Its vibrant color remains striking even in high heat conditions, making it an excellent choice for hot climates.
2. Watering: Double Play® Spiraea are quite drought tolerant after one or two years in the ground. Although they tolerate dry conditions, it’s important to water them consistently.
3. Fertilizing: Minimal fertilization is required. If desired, apply a granular rose fertilizer in early spring. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch is recommended; no additional treatment is necessary. Using a slow-release fertilizer that lasts 3-4 months may decrease the amount of growth in early spring.
4. Pruning: Double Play® Spirea naturally grows in a neat, tidy shape, requiring minimal pruning. If desired, you can trim or prune them after they bloom in the spring. This will promote a second flush of colorful new growth and remove the first round of spent flowers for a cleaner appearance. However, be careful not to prune the new growth in spring, as this will eliminate the flowers.
