The Story

The Showstopping Tree With Black Foliage

No tree shows off quite like the Black Diamond® Crimson Crown™ Crape Myrtle Shrub! Its dark black leaves are a rarity, contrasting with the scarlet red hues of the blooms. This tree begins flowering in late spring through to the first frost in fall, ensuring a display of color all summer long.

The Black Diamond® Crimson Crown™ Crape Myrtle Shrub is considered intermediate, meaning it will grow in a small tree or shrub form depending on how it is pruned. It grows to 12 ft. tall and is perfectly suited to small gardens and ornamental landscapes. It can also be grown as a container or landscape annual in colder climates.

The Crimson Crown™ is known for being low-maintenance, heat-tolerant, and disease-tolerant. Once established, minimal work is needed to enjoy its steady, beautiful blooms.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Choose a location that receives full sunlight. Black DiamondÂŽ Crape Myrtle Shrubs must receive 6-8 hours of sunlight a day to maintain their black foliage. If planted in partial shade, the color of the foliage will be greener.

Mix compost into your soil and then dig a hole twice the size of the tree’s container. Remove the tree from the container and place it into the hole. Hold the stem straight as you fill the hole with the soil.

Add a layer of mulch to help conserve water and suppress weeds, making sure the mulch does not touch the base and stem of the tree.

2. Watering: Water the tree often and deeply until well established, approximately every other day for one month. Black DiamondŽ Crape Myrtle Shrubs are drought-tolerant and require minimal supplemental watering once established.

3. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering shrubs.

4. Pruning: Prune sparingly to help shape the tree and encourage branching. If the tree is not leafing out in the spring, it may have experienced winter kill. In this case, prune back until you see green growth, and it will bush out again.
