Planting & Care

1. Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and slightly shallower. Place the shrub in the hole and backfill with a mixture of native soil and compost, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the ground. Spread a layer of mulch over the soil to conserve water, insulate roots, and suppress weeds.

2. Watering: Water regularly, especially during the first two growing seasons to establish strong roots. Once established, lilacs are drought tolerant but will perform best with supplemental water during hot weather.

3. Pruning: Baby Kim blooms on old wood and needs little pruning. Focus on removing dead, diseased, or spindly wood and to promote good air circulation. Prune immediately after flowering to remove spent flowers and tidy overall appearance. Avoid pruning in fall, winter or early spring, which will remove flower buds.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a slow release, balanced fertilizer like a 10-10-10 in early spring after the ground has thawed. A second application of fertilizer can be given in early summer.
